Long before The Magical Tram came to be, Hayley was busy at work creating whatever she could. Winning first place in a junior category at the Royal Adelaide Show was a particular highlight for ten-year-old Hayley! It was something that helped mark the beginning of a creative journey that now continues through SALA.
Deeply personal and richly nostalgic, this project honours author and illustrator Hayley Frazer’s grandfather, Clem. Proudly known as ‘Conductor 647’ for Adelaide’s historic Municipal Tramways Trust. His legacy becomes the beating heart of the story, inspiring a gentle exploration of memory, kindness, and social literacy for young readers.
This online exhibition offers an intimate, behind the scenes look at the creative journey behind the book. Visitors will discover early concept art, character sketches, developmental illustrations, and the visual evolution of the beloved “Ding, ding!” tram that carries Clem and his passengers through a world shaped by connection and community.
