Did you know that once Adelaide’s trams ceased operation in 1958 (apart from the Glenelg line), many tram drivers transferred to buses? So did Clem! He would still drive the Bay Tram occasionally, but he also continued working as a conductor.
Our lovely conductor would pick up a dog at the Mitcham terminus who waited patiently outside the driver’s door. Looking up at him with unforgettable brown eyes, Clem nodded and allowed the dog to hop on for a circuit!
Clem said: “Now I had him on the bus, the thought struck me how I was going to get him off the bus. I didn’t need to worry — as soon as I made the U‑turn he got off the other side of the terminus. He walked across the road to wait for the next bus.”
Where do you think Clem loved going?
