Hayley’s journey at The Heights School was a testament to the power of support, resilience, and community.

“All aboard for The Heights School!” called the magical tram conductor, as the Magical Tram and its special passenger prepared for another adventure. On a crisp spring morning, the tram glided through familiar streets, evoking a sense of nostalgia and excitement. The number 647 on the conductor’s hat shone brightly, a symbol of pride and dedication.
Arriving in the third term of Year 7 after a difficult start to the year, Hayley found herself in an environment that embraced her unique needs and provided the encouragement she needed to thrive. From the beginning, The Heights School recognised Hayley’s potential and provided her with a personalised learning plan that included extra time for assignments and exams, and different types of assessments. This support was crucial in helping Hayley manage her Dyslexia and Dysgraphia, allowing her to focus on her strengths and develop her skills.
One of the most significant moments in Hayley’s journey was her placement with an art teacher who encouraged her to draw while listening to lessons. This approach not only made Hayley feel comfortable but also helped reduce her anxiety and keep her engaged in the classroom. It was a small but impactful gesture that showed Hayley that her unique learning style was valued.
In Year 8, Hayley’s English teacher learnt about her dream of becoming a writer and encouraged her not to let Dyslexia stop her. By citing famous authors with Dyslexia, the teacher provided Hayley with role models and reinforced the idea that her condition did not have to be a barrier to success. This encouragement played a significant role in boosting Hayley’s confidence and determination.
Drama also played a crucial role in Hayley’s growth. Participating in drama productions helped her build confidence, develop teamwork and problem-solving skills, and provided a creative outlet for expression. In Year 9, Hayley stage managed a major production off-site, spending weekends at school and forming a strong bond with her Creative Arts teacher. This experience was pivotal in helping Hayley develop leadership skills and a sense of accomplishment.
In Year 9, one of Hayley’s teachers arranged a school book launch for “Something A Little Different.” The book launch was a celebration of her achievements and a testament to her resilience and creativity.
From Year 9, Hayley had an Individual Learning Plan that somehow worked wonders. One of her tasks was to write a story, and from this, “See the Kindness” was born. This project allowed Hayley to channel her creativity and share her message of kindness with others.
In Year 10, Hayley began mentoring Year 2 students, helping them with their reading and writing skills. This mentoring experience not only benefited the younger students but also helped Hayley develop her leadership and teaching abilities.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought new challenges. The disruption of routine, isolation, and remote learning made it tough for Hayley, but she persevered. Despite the difficulties, she continued to work hard and support her peers.
In Year 11, Hayley faced struggles but still managed to complete a VET Certificate III in Early Education and Care. By Year 12, she had a good year and was well-respected by her peers. Her journey was a testament to her resilience and the unwavering support of The Heights School.
Throughout her time at The Heights School, Hayley had two home group teachers: in Year 8, with one of the home group teachers staying with her and the class until Year 12. This consistency and stability were crucial for her emotional and academic growth.
As the magical tram prepared to depart, one could reflect on the profound impact The Heights School had on Hayley’s life. It was here that she learnt the true meaning of perseverance, creativity, and the power of a supportive community.
Waving goodbye to The Heights School, the tram moved forward, carrying with it the lessons and memories that had shaped Hayley’s journey. Thank you for joining her on this magical ride. Until next time, keep believing in the magic of support and creativity!
