I’m Hayley Frazer, and today I want to take you on a magical journey into the heart of world-building. As a writer and artist, creating enchanting worlds is one of my greatest joys. It’s a process that lets me mix imagination with storytelling, bringing to life places where anything is possible.
The Spark of Inspiration
Every world begins with a spark of inspiration. For me, it often starts with a simple idea or a whimsical thought. It could be a magical tram that travels through memories. These ideas are the seeds that grow into fully-fledged worlds.
Crafting the Setting
The setting is the foundation of any world. I love to create places that are both familiar and fantastical. In “The Magical Tram,” for example, I combined the real-life history of Adelaide’s trams with a touch of magic. This blend of reality and fantasy makes the world feel both grounded and wondrous.
Bringing Characters to Life
Characters are the heart of any story. When building a world, I focus on creating characters that are relatable yet extraordinary. Clem, the conductor of The Magical Tram, is a perfect example. He’s a character with a rich backstory and a playful personality, making him both engaging and memorable.
Adding Magical Elements
Magic is what truly sets a world apart. It’s the element that allows for endless possibilities. Whether it’s a tram that can travel through time or animals that can talk, these magical elements add depth and excitement to the story. They also provide opportunities for unexpected twists and turns.
Weaving in Themes
Every world I create carries underlying themes. In my stories, I often explore themes of empathy, kindness, and the celebration of individuality. These themes not only enrich the narrative but also resonate with readers on a deeper level.
Visual Storytelling
As someone who loves storyboarding, visual storytelling is a crucial part of my process. I sketch out scenes and characters, bringing my ideas to life on paper before they become words on a page. This helps me visualize the world and ensures that every detail is just right.
True Stories and Personal Connections
One of the most special aspects of “The Magical Tram” is its foundation in true stories. The character of Clem, the tram conductor, is inspired by my grandfather, who worked as a tram conductor in Adelaide. His real-life adventures and experiences add a layer of authenticity and personal connection to the story.

Finally, the most rewarding part of world-building is sharing it with you, the readers. I strive to create worlds that invite you to explore, dream, and believe in the magic of storytelling.
